Chapter 39- Realization
Abbie and Ella grew closer over the week they had spent together at Jinxx’s house, enough so that they could eat meals together (if you could even call the small portions Abbie consumed a meal) and have small conversations. Still, Abbie refused to sleep in Jinxx’s house and stayed outside at night. It reminded her of before she was even in the Black Army, even before she had found her tree cave. She didn’t have any nightmares when she slept as a horse. She didn’t dream at all. She liked it that way. She hated dreams, even the good kind.
On the morning she was supposed to go back to Sammi, she was surprised to hear another car drive up and another door slam shut. The mare looked up from her grazing (Jinxx decided eating grass would be better than for her to eat pancakes for every meal, so for breakfast she grazed) and cautiously watched the house. She shrank down to a human and didn’t dare look away from the door. She didn’t even blink. His voice was familiar, though she hadn’t heard a lot of it. Her eyes widened as she saw the door nob twist and she tried to run, but her entire body remained frozen. Jake stepped out of the house and looked at the girl.
“Hi,” he said, flashing her a weak smile. Abbie took a step back.
“Abbie, it’s ok,” Jinxx reassured her. Abbie shook her head and ran away from Jake. He ran right after her, she could hear him. She ran right into the fence and fell to the ground, holding her head. The crack of a whip echoed throughout her head. Her back stung.
“Make it stop! Please stop it. I can’t tell you. I can’t! Just please kill me,” she said, tears filling her eyes. Jake stopped dead in his track and stared at her. She hugged her knees to her chest and cried, cradling herself. He looked back at Jinxx and Ella, who shrugged. Jinxx slowly walked over to Abbie and put his arms around her. She stiffned. His arms were welcoming, she wanted him to be there with her, but her body wouldn’t allow her to relax.
“Please? I want to, I really want to,” she whispered to herself so quietly not even Jinxx was able to hear her. She started to cry harder. “Please. He’s fine. He was trying to help us.” This time, her voice was louder. Jinxx looked down at her and furrowed his brow. After a few minutes of her silently crying, her body relaxed and she leaned into Jinxx.
“I don’t like this. I don’t like any of this. I want to go back to before everything. Before I was even brought to this stupid planet,” she told Jinxx. He pulled away from her and tried his best not to let her know what he was feeling. She could tell, he wasn’t very good at hiding his emotions.  Jake’s eyes widened slightly and he smiled.
“I know you do, Abbie, but no matter how much you wish you stayed there, you’d be dead now. They saved you’re life no matter how bad they are, they did. You’re real family may be gone, but we’re you’re family now. We’re all family. Remember those walks we went on? When we just talked? Or you going up and singing on stage with An- I mean just going up on stage and singing. People were worried about you when you didn’t show up. We couldn’t even try to play it off. Everyone knew something was wrong and tried to help. You may not think so, but we are a family. If you don’t like that then we must’ve gotten the wrong girl,” he said. Abbie looked at him. She blinked and shook her head, then ran towards him as fast as she could and hugged him. He almost fell back onto the ground from the force of her propelling herself towards him. He squeezed her back.
“I think I’m ready for Ashley and CC now,” she whispered, “big brother.”
